Reasons to Believe

Is our faith important? Does what we believe really matter? According to Jesus’ words in Mark 16:15-16, it does. It makes an eternal difference for everyone. Possibly every person comes to a place in life where they place their faith in something or someone. For the Christian, it is the Lord Jesus Christ, but this is true even for the atheist. Dr. Michael Ruse is a philosopher of science, particularly of the evolutionary sciences. He is the author of several books on Darwinism and evolutionary ideas and in an article in the National Post, he wrote, “evolution is promoted by its practitioners as more than mere science. Evolution is promulgated as an ideology, a secular religion, a full-fledged alternative to Christianity, with meaning and morality… evolution is a religion.” The point I am making is, even the atheist believes in something.

One of the things we need to understand is that God gave us His Word so we could know Him and have faith in Him (Romans 10:17). From this point alone I want to share with you what I will call “Reasons to Believe”. These reasons will focus on the divine inspiration of scripture and the fulfillment of Bible prophecy.
– 2 Timothy 3:16-17 KJV; Psalm 119:60 NKJV; Matthew 24:35; 1 Thessalonians 2:13 all tell us God’s Word is divinely inspired
– Consider the divine inspiration of the Word of God concerning Jesus Christ from the prophecies in the Old Testament. There are more than 300 prophecies that Christ fulfilled in His first coming. For example…
o Isaiah revealed the manner of the birth of Christ- “of a virgin”
o Micah pinpointed the place of His birth- Bethlehem
o Both Genesis and Jeremiah specified His ancestry
o Daniel foretold the time of His birth and death
o The Psalms foretold His betrayal, His accusations by false witnesses, His manner of death- pierced in His
hands and feet, although crucifixion hadn’t yet been invented.
o His resurrection (how He would be left in hell and His body not seeing decay, how He would rise from the
     dead) and ascension to Heaven.

Think about it- over 300 prophecies like these were perfectly fulfilled! The probability of just 8 prophecies being fulfilled is 1 in 100,000,000,000,000. So you can understand what that would look like, if you took this number of silver dollars, they would cover the state of Texas to a depth of 2 feet. This means the chances of these things happening would be like you finding the 1 silver dollar you painted red in the pile. In effect, dozens of these old testament prophecies created a fingerprint that only the true Christ could fit, and only Jesus, throughout history, matches this prophetic fingerprint.

In Matthew 16:15 Jesus asked His disciples, who do you say I am? The truth is Jesus is still asking that same question to each of us. Hopefully, the things I’ve shared in this blog will help you answer that question too. Our eternal destiny depends on it.
