It tells us, “Above all taking the shield of faith, wherewith you shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. Above all means out in front of all or it is speaking of a covering. In other words, we are to use our faith as a shield that will defend us against the attacks of satan. Taking means, the need for us to pick it back up, implying it must be in position to protect us. Quench means to extinguish by drowning in water. Fiery darts were literal arrows. They actually were long hollow arrows which contained a flammable liquid in them and when the end was lit and shot they exploded upon impact. Now let’s talk about the Roman Soldiers shield that the Apostle Paul was likening to our shield of faith. Before the battle, the soldier would soak his shield in water until it was totally saturated. This meant that not only did his shield defend him but it could as well quench those fiery arrows. So what does that mean for us as believers? Well Romans 10:17 tells us, faith comes to us from hearing the Word of God. The Word of God in Ephesians 5:26 is also likened unto water. So when we regularly read, study, meditate, and submit ourselves to the Word of God, we soak our faith with the Word just as the Roman Soldiers soaked his shield with water. In other words, it will be so heavily soaked with water of God’s Word that even if a fiery dart pierces our shield, the huge amount of the Word in us will extinguish the flames and put out the potentially dangerous situation. We are to let the water of the Word saturate our faith that if the enemy tries to launch a surprise attack on us, on our health, finances, marriage, children, family, church, business, or job, he will find that his fiery darts have no impact on your Word soaked shield of faith.
