The Deity of Christ

It should not come as a surprise to us today, that who Jesus Christ is, has come under attack again. Throughout history His Name and teachings have brought either praise or criticism from mankind. However one thing remains the same, it is only through His Name that salvation comes to mankind (Acts 4:12). As believers we should not be confused about who Jesus Christ is. Therefore, in this short blog I want to look at a few things concerning the deity of Jesus Christ (Deity meaning God and identifying who God is).

I do this to strengthen your belief system and help you to defend the true gospel message (Jude 3) that is under attack in our society today. John 1:1, 14 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. And the Word was made flesh (became a human being) and dwelt among us, (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only Begotten of the Father) full of grace and truth”. The Word here refers to Jesus Christ, who is God’s revelation of Himself (John 14:9). God’s Word clearly teaches us that God became a human being so that He could die to redeem us to Himself (Galatians 1:4 and Hebrews 2:14-16). Yes, Jesus Christ, the second Person of the Godhead, left heaven and came to earth to die in our place and fulfill the great plan of redemption so we could be saved (Philippians 2:5-11).

1 John 5:20 states, “And we know that the Son of God is come, and has given us an understanding, that we may know Him that is true, and we are in Him that is true, even in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life”. Notice the Bible calls Jesus the true God and the only One Who can give eternal life. You see there are not many ways to God and eternal life, only one, and that is Jesus Christ (John 14:6). In a day when many believe there are many ways to God, God Himself tells us there is still only one way. God’s only way is Jesus Christ.

There is also another false doctrine I want you to be aware of and that is, Jesus Christ did not come in the flesh. As you read 1 John 4:1-3 you will see where this thinking originates from, “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. Here by know we the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh (to earth as a human) is of God. And every spirit that confesses not (refuses to say this about) that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, where of ye have heard that it should come: and even now already is it in the world”. You see, satan works to deceive mankind about the incarnation (God becoming man) because without it, man cannot be saved. You see, Jesus was 100% God and 100% man so He could be the sacrifice to save us from our sins (Matthew 1:21, 23).

Even though Jesus became a man, He was more than just a man, He was God manifested in the flesh. In closing I will leave you with a few more scriptural points proving the Deity of Jesus Christ.

  • Jesus accepted Divine worship due only to God:  Matthew 14:33; Matthew 2:11; Matthew 8:2; Luke 24:52; John 9:28; John 20:28
  • Only Deity can forgive sins and Jesus forgave sins:  Psalms 103:3; Mark 2:7,10; Luke 5:19-24; Luke 7:44-49
  • Jesus Christ is equally God as God the Father is God:  John 5:23; John 10:30-33; John 20:28
